No Mow May

No Mow May is a campaign started by the wild plant conservation charity Plantlife to encourage people to refrain from mowing their lawns during the month of May to allow wildflowers to bloom and support pollinators like bees and butterflies. It’s a simple way to increase biodiversity and contribute to a more sustainable ecosystem.

Even if you have a small area of grass, or decide just to leave a section of your lawn to grow it will still deliver enormous gains for nature.  Increasing the insect life within your garden will provide food for birds and bats.

At Pitton Nature Trust we have once again cut paths through longer grass in The Close so you can easily observe the wildflowers, grasses, butterflies and insects.  There are already early signs that the wildflowers seeds and plugs introduced last year are starting to emerge.  The fruit trees planted in March are now also coming into blossom.

So why not spend some of the time you save not cutting your grass to pop along and have a look to see what you can spot.
